Add a quote calculator to your price list

Let buyers work out their own total on the page: quantity, discount and tax in, a price out. How to build the calculator in the Studio, step by step.

A price list answers "how much is one". Buyers want to know "how much for what I need". A calculator on the page answers that without a phone call.

This is how to add one to a price list in the Studio, using the quote starter.

Start from the quote starter

Open your flipbook, choose Pages, then Add a calculator on the page with your prices. Under Start from, choose Quote with tax. You get four inputs and four results:

  • Inputs: price each, quantity, a discount you choose from a list, and the sales tax rate.
  • Results: subtotal, discount, tax and total.

The preview on the right is exactly what readers will see. Type in it and the results change.

Make it yours

Change the labels to your own words. Change the starting price to your most popular product, so the first thing a reader sees is a believable number.

The discount is a choice: each line is a label and a number, such as Volume discount = 15, where 15 stands for fifteen percent. Edit the lines to match your real discounts.

How the formulas work

Each result has a formula. The subtotal is **price * qty. The discount is subtotal * deal / 100. The total is subtotal - off + taxes**.

A result can use the inputs and any result above it, so you can build a total in steps, the way you would on paper. Use brackets, the usual + - * / and ^, and a few functions: round, min, max, if and pmt. Write a percentage as a number divided by 100.

If a formula does not work, the editor says which one and why, as you type. You cannot save a calculator that does not work.

Tiered pricing

Use if to change the price at a quantity. For example, price each of if(qty >= 100, 8, if(qty >= 50, 9, 10)) charges 10 for small orders, 9 from 50 and 8 from 100. Put that in the first result and use it in the next.

What readers experience

A button over the page says Open the calculator. It opens in a window over the flipbook. They type, the results change, and Reset puts the starting values back. If a box is empty or a sum cannot be worked out, they see a dash, not a wrong answer.

What they type never leaves their browser. We do not receive it, store it or log it.

Good to know

  • Calculators are part of the paid plans.
  • A flipbook that is for sale cannot have one.
  • Publishing a new version removes the calculators, because the page they belong to has changed. Add them again to the new version.
  • Say in the small print that the total is an estimate if it is one. The Studio gives you a line under the results for that.
